In the heart of Burgundy and at the gateway to the Massif Central, Morvan offers visitors its lavish nature and beautiful winding roads. Its rugged natural park is full of charming places and good restaurants to discover including the Relais Bernard Loiseau.
Welcome to the heart of Morvan for a tour between woods and lakes, between Avallon and Clamecy, your town of arrival.
Ref : 569
Avallon
ClamecyYour tour starts in the heart of Burgundy, in Avallon. Perched on a granite spur, surrounded by ramparts and towers, the town dominates the Vallée du Cousin with its garden terraces. Its clock tower and half-timbered houses sit alongside numerous shops.
Leave Avallon via the D944 and travel for just 6km before arriving at Chastellux-sur-Cure where a pretty chateau is hidden in the woods.
Take the opportunity stop at the café-restaurant in L’Huis-Raquin, 2km from the hamlet. Nearby, you will find a stop-off point before you enter Nièvre.
Twenty kilometres away, another chateau awaits, Vésigneux sits beside a lake, perfect for a nap in the shade!
Heading towards Saulieu, you’ll be amazed by Saut de Gouloux, a wooden café-restaurant located at the edge of a small river (La Cure). At the end of this first stage, you arrive in Saulieu, with the famous Relais de Bernard Loiseau in its centre. In addition to its famous large restaurant, the lively Rue du Marché, an exhibition hall open all year round, and Gourmet Days staged in May make it a showcase for a thousand flavours.
Spend the night in Saulieu.
MyTripTailor tip: time permitting, stop at the Réservoir de Chaumeçon before arriving in Saulieu.
On this second day, leave Saulieu for Château-Chinon. Head towards the tourist office then follow the direction of the D26.
Arriving in Alligny, you can stop off to quench your thirst at Auberge du Morvan, a quiet pub with ample parking for customers.
You can also find something to offer for a nice picnic in Arleuf before heading off to Château-Chinon.
Next, take the D958 to Vézelay which takes you past two other beautiful chateaux, Lantigny and Vilmolin. Chateau de Bazoches, a little further along the D958, is really worth a detour! After that, Vézelay is only a short distance.
The last step of your journey: Clamecy, which you reach via the D951, is a good place to eat, on the terrace if the weather allows.
MyTripTailor Advice: in Vézelay, park at the bottom of the village and walk along Rue Principale with all its artisan crafts. Exploring the basilica is even more impressive.
