Between folklore and gastronomy
This is a beautiful 200km tour in the Landes de Gascogne! The villages crossed, with their festivals and great restaurants, are less tranquil than they may seem. Further east are massive castles and villages where music reigns, with bistros that are well worth a visit. Good times lay ahead!

Mont-de-Marsan is the place of choice for those looking to learn more about the folklore and traditions of Landes de Gascon. Take the road to Sabres after wandering through the lazy cafe terraces.
About twenty kilometers away, Graine de Forêt, a small museum in Garein, tells of the pines and the work of foresters; children can even imitate them on mini-machines.
Sabres is famous for its Marquèze Ecomuseum. Park your car and take the old train for a ride from centuries past: Over two hours, you will visit the Airial, half-prairie half forest, where the chicken coop is perched on four poles to escape the fox.
Opposite the town hall, the banks of the Leyre is an ideal area for picnics.
5 km further, Uzeste appears. There are so many events here: the ‘chant de palombe’ competition in autumn, the soup competition in May, the Cross of Saint-Jean in June, you can even learn to decorate scrap wood with flowers, nothing better to chase away the bad spirits!
Towards the end of the day, head for Bazas where you can spend the evening and night.
MyTripTailor Advice: At the end of August, Uzeste becomes the capital of jazz. Look out for programme details.
You wake in Bazas where the imposing cathedral sits at the end of the square. At the top of a portal pillar on the left, a small chap covers his face; opposite is a brazen companion with skirt raised. On the Feast of St. John (summer solstice), the young people leap over the fire and then, with a lit torch in hand, return home turning it in circles. If it remains alight, the year will be a happy one. As for you, to stay happy, don’t miss the chance to taste its famous beef!
Leave Bazas for two hours of relaxation in the pools with bubble beds and Jacuzzis and under water jet massages in Casteljaloux.
Take the road again to leave the Landes and its forests little by little. Pass Gabarret, Barbotan and Cazaubon. Heading towards Labastide-d’Armagnac, there is a curiosity not to be missed: the Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Cyclistes.
Finally, don’t overlook the fact that you are in of Armagnac, which you can sample everywhere in the area: St-Justin, Roquefort or Arthez-d’Armagnac. Always in moderation of course!
MyTripTailor Advice: on the way back to Mont-de-Marsan, go through Villeneuve-de-Marsan to see a last bastide.
