The flagship city of sailing, La Rochelle continues to revolve largely around the sea, following the expansion of its marina in recent years. On land, the bike is king. The city has pioneered the development of car-free days and cycle share schemes. Sail leisurely between its fortified Old Port, its secret streets lined with arcades, its churches, its numerous museums, its aristocratic hotels and its parks that make up the riches of its architectural heritage.
Stroll around the Gabut district, visit the Tour Saint-Nicolas tower, the Tour de la Chaine and the Tour de la Lanterne before heading to the old town where you can find something to eat.
Another option if the family is feeling sporty: a bike ride on the Ile de Ré to Saint-Martin to discover the port, its citadel and its donkeys.
MyTripTailor Tip: If you like music, enjoy the Francofolies (July). Movie buffs, visit the International film Festival (end of June-early July).
You wake up on this second day in La Rochelle. Enjoy this beautiful city with a stroll through Parc Charruyer which surrounds the city alongside its ancient fortifications (2km long and 200m wide). You’ll find winding lanes, children’s playgrounds and a mini golf course, as well as a river where swans and herons frolic.
Saddle up! It’s time to jump on your bikes again by taking the Vélodyssée ® towards Châtelaillon-Plage.
The pleasant waterfront shines with its beautifully renovated villas along a beach regularly re-sanded and supervised in summer. Numerous activities are on offer: swimming lessons, aquagym, beach-ball, mini-golf…
From the waterfront promenade, you can enjoy a semicircular view, from left to right of the tip of La Fumée, Fort Enet, île d’Aix, île d’Oléron in the backdrop and the Pointe du Chay.
Overnight here in La Rochelle.
MyTripTailor Tip: This seaside resort organises a kite festival on Sundays and Easter Monday.
It’s time to leave the resort to pedal 35km towards Rochefort where you will spend the night.
Along the way, stop at the Marais d’Yves Nature Reserve. Located 5km south of Châtelaillon-Plage, the reserve stretches south of the tip of Boucholeurs, around a vast lagoon. In the nature centre that welcomes visitors, you can research the reserve and observe the birds through field-glass telescopes. You will need to be accompanied by a guide to access the reserve. You can go to the observation post, located 1km away, and also enjoy themed visits: “Plant Whispering“, “Junior Safari”, Bike Rides, Kayak Outings.
Upon your arrival in Rochefort, you can stroll around the Arsenal district and take the time to visit the Marine Museum, followed by La Corderie Royale (Royal Rope Making Factory) and the Museum of Art and history.
After a break on the terrace, go and admire the Martrou transportation bridge, a classified historical Monument
MyTripTailor Advice: a region of art and history, Rochefort offers guided tours (1h30), as well as a tour that traces the filming of Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (2h).
This is the last day of the tour in Rochefort. Spend some time visiting the places you didn’t have time to see the day before like the Museum of Art and History or the Conservatory of Begonia.
Another option is to head back to La Rochelle on your bike.
