Carentan Cherbourg

Day 1 - Carentan - Sainte-Mère-Église

Carentan, won back from the enemy on 12 June 1944, has since undergone major restoration and reconstruction work. You will then head towards Saint-Côme-du-Mont where you may like to try the D-Day experience flight simulator. At Sainte-Mère-Église, the first town liberated in France (look out for the emblematic mannequin hanging from the church steeple), you will see many sites devoted to the D-Day landing, in particular the 0 marker of the Road to Freedom.

  • Distance : 22 km
  • Duration : 0h30

Day 2 - Sainte-Mère-Église - Cherbourg

Utah Beach Museum was built on Utah Beach, on the very same spot where the Americans landed on 6 June 1944. The Gun battery of Azeville, a major fortification along the Atlantic Wall, was covered in a camouflage of painted stones so that it blended in with the village houses: make sure you visit the battery and its huge underground network. En route to Cherbourg, don’t miss the opportunity to stop at Valognes. We also recommend visiting the fortifications at Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue.

  • Distance : 65 km
  • Duration : 1h10

Day 3 - Cherbourg - Cherbourg

Before leaving the town, hop on board a boat and listen to the commentary as you tour the harbour to better grasp its strategic importance in terms of supplies for the Allies during WWII. Finish your journey at the Liberation Museum, whose reconstitutions of civilian and military daily life are striking.
