The Gorges of the Ardèche and Prehistory
A tour that offers a genuine journey through time. A 3-day itinerary in the Gorges of the Ardèche that includes visits to some of the most well-known caves, gorges and ravines in France. You will take in charming villages with exceptional sunshine and enjoy the full, lush nature of the Ardèche
Ref : 22
Your tour begins in Bourg-Saint-Andéol, a pleasant location on the right bank of the Rhône. Take the time to stroll through the heart of the old town with its beautiful mansions, restored convents and numerous fountains including the formidable Dona Vierna. After lunch on the terrace, you can visit Palais des Evêques.
Not far from Bourg Saint-Andéol, you can go to admire the famous Dent de Rez. The more adventurous may even choose to climb it. Further on, at the Larnas junction, the road dips into a stoney gorge: the Sainte-Baume gorges. The heat that reigns during summer months has earned it the nickname of « Val Chaud ». Bottles of water are a must!
You are now at the point of the second leg of your trip: Les Vans.
MyTripTailor advice: a great trip suggestions for the children: la Forêt des Jeux in Saint-Remèze.
Exceptional sunshine, a large shaded square of plane trees, a colourful market, the vivid whiteness of limestone: an afternoon in Vans. Not to be missed: the Païolive woods and the unforgettable gorges of Chassezac. Leave the car in the first car park on the left and follow the signposted trail to discover the magnificent Chassezac gorge and admire the château de Casteljau.
Now is the time to don your best swim suit for a bathe in the gorges of the Ardèche. Canoeing is an absolute must and you should head to Vallon Pont d’Arc to hire one. Numerous climbing and hiking activities are also on offer.
Return to Les Vans for an overnight stay before heading off to Pont-Saint-Esprit the following day.
MyTripTailor advice: Too hot? Go for a dip in Mazet-Plage !
The last day! After leaving Les Vans, go and explore the unique Caverne du Pont. Here, in this reconstructed cave, you can explore the masterpieces of the first artists in the history of mankind, dating back 36,000 years. The works are revealed among the stalagmites and stalactites: hundreds of animals painted with red ochre or carved with flint.
Head in the direction of Pont-Saint-Esprit, a pretty Gard village that can be covered in half a day. Wander along rue Saint-Jacques to admire the old houses, before moving onto place Saint-Pierre to reach the terrace that offers beautiful views of the famous bridge, almost 1km long.
MyTripTailor advice: 10kms west, you can visit Chartreuse de Valbonne where the old monks’ lodgings have been converted to hotel rooms.
