BrestYour journey begins in Tréguier, an ancient episcopal city nestled in an estuary of the Côtes-d’Armor. Don’t miss the gothic cathedral of Saint-Tugdual! You can also drop by the neighbouring commune of Trédarzec to visit the Kerdalo botanic gardens. Afterwards, head to Perros-Guirec and follow the Chemin des Douaniers for a wonderful walk along the pink granite coast. Visit the Ploumana’ch lighthouse and the pointe du Squéouel to admire the views. Made up of innumerable rocks separated by coves, it’s one of the most area’s most advanced headlands.
After wandering to Perros-Guirec, take the road for a beautiful loop along the coast and inland. Cross Ploumana’ch to reach Trégastel – with its remarkable historical, archaeological and religious remains – then on to the village of Pleumeur-Bodou, famous for its impressive dome in the Parc du Radôme and its Cité des télécoms, where the first transatlantic link was made. Push on to the Pointe de Bihit, for an exceptional panorama, before returning to Lannion and your next starting point.
Head towards Lannion then Morlaix passing by the coast. You can visit the capital of Trégor, a mix of modern and “old Brittany”, or head directly to Saint-Paul-de-Léon to visit its cathedral and admire its old houses – including that of Mérimée. Finally, go to Roscoff, a small port where the granite facades of grand shipowners’ houses line the narrow streets. You can also take an excursion to l’île de Batz (pronounced “Ba”) which has around 20 beaches and coves, as well as a charming village to relax.
Head to l’île de Batz if you didn’t find time to do so the day before! Otherwise, take the road to le Folgoët, a superb basilica founded in the 14th century and completed in 1423. Unique in character, it’s unusual “L-shaped” form includes the fountain of Salaün, where pilgrims come to drink. Finally head to Brest, where a thousand and one activities await you: visit the marina, the chateau or the Tour Tanguy. For deep sea enthusiasts, the ocean discovery centre is outstanding.
You’ll need more than one afternoon to cover all the city’s offerings! Take the time to explore the manoir de Keroual, the maison de la Fontaine or the Fort Montbarey. You can also drive to Pointe Saint-Matthieu to visit its ancient abbey and lighthouse, and explore le Conquet, a small fishing port with some charming old houses along a tourist route.
