A Royal itinerary from Fontainebleau to Versailles
Far from the hustle and bustle of Paris, Ile de France is home to some exceptional places. Head turning chateaux slumber in lush greenery at the heart of sumptuous estates. From Fontainebleau to Versailles via Rambouillet, the royal history of France was written in the splendour of these palaces. Nowadays they vie ingeniously to revive the ‘great century’ and political life of that time. A tour such as this one can give you a taste for royal splendour…

The Château and forest of Fontainebleau offer so much that you’re advised to plan ahead to get the most from your trip. Book one or more of the thematic guided tours to discover the gardens, the Napoleon Museum or the chambers of the historical personalities of this château which experienced eight centuries of sovereign presence. After a picnic in the park, a hike on the Denecourt-Colinet trails, guided by the ingenious ONF app, will reveal the treasures of the Fontainebleau forest.
The château de Vaux-le-Vicomte that once turned Louis XIV pale with jealousy before inspiring Versailles will not disappoint! This 17th century masterpiece, orchestrated by Nicolas Fouquet, assembles the talents of the greatest artists of his time. The Musée des Équipages takes you back in time, roam the extensive grounds of the Jardins de Le Nôtre, whilst the guided tours reveal the château’s fascinating history. On Saturday evenings from May to October, the night visit by candlelight is a delight.
From Rambouillet to the Chevreuse Valley, your route is dotted with beautiful forests ideal for hikes, and castles that have hosted leading historical figures. The Park and the political Château de Rambouillet, the Château de Breteuil and its fascinating reconstructions or the Promenade des Petits-Ponts and the Château de la Madeleine in Chevreuse offer long hours of walks and visits. The Baladobus offers easy access to the various sites of the valley.
Versailles does not deliver all its treasures in one day. You can spend the morning exploring the main rooms of the castle: the Grands appartements, the Galerie des Glaces and the chambre du Roi. Booking a guided tour will give you access to other places such as the appartements privés du roi. After a royal picnic in the park, explore the grounds without forgetting the Domaine de Marie-Antoinette. To fully grasp the splendour of yesteryear, experience the Grandes Eaux Musicales at night!
