Cycling the Route des Crêtes and the wines of Alsace

Who ever said it’s not possible to mix sport, pleasure and culture? With this route, you cycle along the Alsace’s Route des Crêtes passing historic sites and lakes before taking the Route des Vins from Ribeauvillé. From here, you head down along the vineyards to Cernay. Wineries, typical villages and cultural sites will never fail to brighten your journey.

Cernay Cernay

Day 1 - Cernay - Gérardmer

Cycle to Cernay to visit its medieval fortified enclosure and stork park. Enter the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature park via the Route des Crêtes. You can stop off at the magnificent Hartmannswillerkopf First World War memorial, as well as the Grand Ballon mountain pass, for superb panoramic views of the Vosges Méridionales and Black Forest. Finish the course in Gérardmer where you can laze by the lake or enjoy one of the resort’s numerous spas.

Day 2 - Gérardmer - Ribeauvillé

Allow half a day to reach the town of Ribeauvillé at the heart of the Alsace Route des Vins. Reward all your hard work with tastings of Riesling, Pinot Grigio and Gewürztraminer! Take time out to visit the different wineries as well as the town itself: a typically coloured Alsatian town blessed with a rich cultural heritage. Admire the main street with its half-timbered houses, the Tour des Bouchers and the Saint-Grégoire-le-Grand church, before moving on to the superb château de Saint-Ulrich.

Day 3 - Ribeauville - Cernay

Your sporting and gastronomic journey concludes by heading along the Route des vins to Cernay. The vineyards, pretty villages, ancient castles and tasting cellars will brighten your journey, along with small chapels and vast abbeys. Stop off at Hunawihr, labeled the “most beautiful village in France” and, of course, Colmar, the “little Venice” with its romantic canals and the capital of the region’s wines. You arrive in Cernay filled with memories both for your eyes…and your palate!
