It is a great introduction to to the wines you will get to learn more about as you travel along the route. In the afternoon, start familiarising yourself with the wines of Saumur by visiting one of the town’s cellars. Spend the night in Saumur.
Set off for your first day of cycling. You will come across several cellars when leaving Saumur, such as Bouvet Ladubay or Ackerman, if you want to start your day with a tasting. This 50-km stage will allow you to immerse yourself in the exceptional landscapes on the banks of the Loire, as you follow the river’s course. On the way you can visit the former priory in Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne, founded in the 10th century. You will arrive in Angers, where you will find several cellars offering tastings of wine from the Anjou ‘appellation’, and where you can go to the Maison des Vins d’Anjou Saumur, if you did not get the chance to visit the one in Saumur. Spend the night in Angers.
The bike ride is shorter than the previous day’s. Take the opportunity to visit the Château d’Angers before setting off. Then get back on the saddle before making your first stop of the day in Savennières, as you leave Angers; Savennières gave its name to one of the most famous wine ‘appellations’ in Anjou Saumur. You can taste the wine produced in its vineyards at one of the local estates, such as Château d’Epiré, Domaine aux Moines, Domaine Taillandier or Domaine du Closel. You will arrive in the late afternoon at Ingrandes-sur-Loire, where you will spend the night.
Leave Ingrandes-sur-Loire to continue your ride along the Loire. You will make a detour to Varades for a tasting in the town, at the Cave Saint-Vincent. You may also prefer to go directly to Ancenis where several wineries offer tastings such as Domaine de la Pléiade or Domaine des Pierres Meslières. If you have enough time in Ancenis, make sure to visit the 10th-century castle, which is officially classified as French historical monument.
